EDITORIAL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is time for sincerity and depth of feeling. Before anything
else, we want to thank all you good people out there who have been so
kind, and have had such discernment, as to buy MEGADISC. We love you
and we need you, and we couldn't do it without you. We are even more
grateful to those of you who put pen to paper, or byte to disk to tell
us something, to contribute something interesting, or just to let us
know that we're on the right track. Don't stop now! If you don't stop,
we certainly won't. And if you'd like to help us along even more, nag
your local dealer to stock Megadisc if he doesn't already; and tell
that good pal to go and buy one, just like you did. It makes all the
difference.
On more general topics: It seems that there's little doubt that
all of us have made a good decision in buying the Amiga. It is now
the biggest-selling personal computer in Australia, due simply to the
fact that it is an excellent product. People do find out for
themselves, in spite of heavy marketing pushes by the computing giants.
The recent releases of the two new Amiga models will accelerate sales
even more, and we'll all benefit by the snowball effect of more
software and hardware in this market-driven world. Another point:
owners and prospective buyers of the original Amiga 1000 (most of us,
at this point) should not worry about problems of obsolescence, or
phasing out, or value for money in our purchase. Products of all kinds
are appearing locally and from overseas to satisfy our urges for more
and faster, and in the end, anything made for any of the Amiga range
will be available to any of the others. The main problem with your
computer is, as you know, finding the time, and perhaps the money, to
make the most of it. We'll be pleased if we can ease that process in
some way, and "shred some light" on the subject, as one of our users
mentioned.
Very heartening is the fact that Australians are producing good
products for the Amiga: have a look at "OZProducts". Some of them
are very good. Increasingly, there is more information available -
The "Australian Commodore Review" is now the "Commodore and Amiga
Review", and there will soon be a separate local Amiga magazine. User
Groups and BBS's are springing up rapidly, and are a great source of
information and not a bad way to spend your time - check the article
on these for the latest listing. There is also the "Commodore Amiga
Club" with some useful offers for the beginner. Those interested in
"Desktop Publishing" and "Desktop Video" now have a completely viable
alternative in the Amiga, of higher quality and less cost than any of
the usually touted systems. Even the corporate user can now set up a
full business system on the Amiga, while impressing the Accounting
Dept. with his cost-effective choice.
This issue has a wide spread of features, articles and reviews.
There is information about most aspects of the machine, including
Desktop Video, Publishing, graphics of all kinds, games, Disk
structure and what it means, Communications, RAM Expansion, Modula-2
as a programming language, Educational software, all about Public
Domain software, and quite a lot more. We hope that there is something
of interest to all Amiga users, and if you feel that there is
some topic that should be covered, or that you could do better, then
tell us. We'll put it on the next one. We've jazzed up this issue
with flashier text displays (using Escape codes - explained next
issue), and we've got some neat utilities for you which you won't
find anywhere else. There is a lot of coverage of software available
in the Public Domain, which is of very high quality and will save
you a lot of time and money in using your machine. Due to the fact
that Ian has been sick for some weeks, we've decided to wait until
the next issue to do a large and extravagant feature on Music and the
Amiga. In the meantime, there's plenty to keep you going on this one.
The next issue of MEGADISC will have plenty too -
a "Stargazer" program better than Galileo, an exhaustive
review of the Proton Microelectronics 2 MEG RAM board, and a lot more.
For newcomers to Megadisc, we should mention that the two previous
issues have a lot of information of interest - check in the
"Subs&Extras" drawer for information on how to get them, and what's in
them. Any subscribers whose subscription will end with this disk might
like to send in a new subscription form to make sure you get future
Megadiscs.
Anyone who prowls the phone lines might like to know that we
have a section on Ross Kellaway's CLUB AMIGA BBS on (02)5216338. So
you can upload and download all sorts of things there - and anyway,
it's a very good board, and a good resource for any Amiga user.
Many people are still using the original 1.1 System Software -
this is only relevant to Amiga 1000 users, since the 500 and 2000
have 1.2 Software in their very innards, rather than on disk. Now,
for your own sakes, go down to your dealer and get the 1.2 software
(Kickstart, Workbench and Extras disks). Your computer will love it,
you'll love it, AND you'll be able to run MEGADISC 4. For this is the
very last issue of Megadisc made on 1.1. Ask your dealer for the
"1.2 Enhancer Package", which should cost around $30 or so.
Finally, we'd like to thank our many contributors, who have
done us all a favour by sharing their knowledge and expertise at no
charge, in the true spirit of information exchange. Some have given
something for the disk, while others have made themselves available
for advice - their names are:
Robert Lore
Steve Wright
Ross Kellaway
Mike Hassett
Jon Benjamin
Merrill Harding
Richard Hansen
Paul Chatfield
Norm Jackson
Pete Goodeve
Greg Epley
Martin Watson
Graeme Whittle
Jennifer Allen
And thanks to all of you who have bought MEGADISC.
